Petit Trou Updates & Ways To Support Our Partners in Haiti

Wynn Walent, Executive Director

Earlier this month, I traveled to Petit Trou to meet with our partners and receive updates from local leaders. These visits create space for crucial discussions on program progress while also reaffirming the joy and purpose behind our work.

Hospital Construction Has Met Significant Milestones, But a Funding Gap Remains

Local leaders, staff at the health center, community health workers—so many friends and partners expressed their enthusiasm for this project. Our friends in Petit Trou know the scale of the challenges that exist in the country right now, and they repeatedly shared appreciation and excitement for the steady progress that has unfolded over the last year.

Our general contractor, BCP, has made remarkable advances on hospital construction, overcoming significant challenges. Support from our architects, Msaada, has been instrumental, with frequent site visits and daily supervision coordinated with a team of local engineers.

Construction Milestones

  • See here to track our progress from groundbreaking to present

  • Final shipment of materials, including interior finishes and solar components, is set to leave Port-au-Prince in the coming days

  • Updates on solar installation and hospital equipment procurement coming soon

  • We hope to complete construction at the end of this year

  • There is still a significant funding gap to complete the project, scroll down to learn how you can help.

Supporting Petit Trou as more families arrive from Port-au-Prince

In addition to time spent at the hospital, we visited with friends and partners throughout the community. There is an overwhelming need for support as the population of families fleeing Port-au-Prince for the southern region continues to increase.

We spent time with students and teachers at St. Paul’s School and heard stories of success as well as the challenges that come with a growing student body and rising cost of goods in the area. We also visited with Community Health Workers carrying out vital work in their communities. On those visits we heard excitement about the new hospital and what it will mean for the community, and also heard requests for increased pay, more supplies, better access to continuing education. We checked in on demonstration farms in the area and spent time at St. Paul’s girls empowerment summer camp. These efforts are making an enormous difference for families in the region, but there is so much more that can be done.
